My New Year’s Resolution Inspired by @unmarketing

Quit Consuming and Start Implementing in 2013

Quote from Scott Stratten @unmarketing

A golden tweet from @unmarketing. I read this, favorited it, retweeted it and clipped to Evernote.

Have you ever gotten to the point in creating a product that is ready for release but you just can’t get it done? Or maybe you have this long lingering goal that only needs you to implement and it’s done.

I know I have been stuck in this strange holding pattern of consumption before. Why, because it’s easy and safe.  Implementing anything can be scary. There is a feeling of uncertainty that comes with it.

What ifs, buts, maybes, and the worst, failure can be kept at bay while consuming.

We consume looking for the one, all knowing, epic blog post that will give us all the answers. We favorite tweets, send blog posts to Evernote, scour how-to sites, read every bit of info any Guru has ever posted. What do we get from this vast array of knowledge? A headache and self doubt. This is not from a scientific study, but this is the internet so I’m sure you can find less accurate stats than this,

The #1 dream killer of all time, “I don’t know where to start.”

The simple answer, “Stop consuming information and implement once in a while.” - Scott Stratten

With only days left until New Year’s Eve it’s time for a little self reflection. What projects are sitting idly just waiting for you to implement? What is that ONE thing you want to do but it stays hidden behind your never ending safety net of consumption?

Ordinarily I would put a link here to another blog post I wrote about New Year’s Resolutions and achieving your goals faster, but that would seem a tad hypocritical. Take a few weeks and stop consuming. I say let’s make 2013 the year of implementing.

About Eric O'Connor

I battled and beat a life threatening disease, spoke to congress and doctors about Hepatitis C education, bought a business, started a second one, and married my high school sweetheart between the ages of 17 and 21. Ages 21-33 include 3 children, 14 marathons, and 1 nearly fatal dance with Pulmonary Embolisms. Currently I photograph weddings in the Chicago area, and travel the country to consult and speak to small business owners.

Great post! There definitely is a lot of safety nets that I have in place that prevents me from doing. But I need to get over that. So one of the project that is sitting idly and just waiting for me to implement is my BLOG. I always say I will blog more but time and time again, I fall back. But I’m going to take your and Scott’s advice and start implementing. :)

Organizing ideas has been the single most beneficial thing that has helped me and my push to start my photography business. Thank you for that. That has been my idle project, implementing my ideas. Looking forward/scared to death for 2013 but I know it’s good for me.
